The Périgord Pourpre region, centered on the town of Bergerac, is focused on wine. The mild climate of the area and the sloping river valley is ideal for vineyards. Bergerac and Montbazillac are perhaps the best known of the regional wines. The area around Bergerac is also known for its cultivation of tobacco, another major crop.
