Day 1 Start the day with breakfast in your hotel or, preferably, in a nearby sidewalk café. Then take the Métro to the Charles de Gaulle-Étoile station and emerge to view the gigantic Arc de Triomphe, built between 1806 and 1836 in honor of Napoleon's Grande Armée. Stroll down the Champs-Élysées to Place Clemenceau, near the Grand Palais, and turn left up Avenue de Marigny to Place Beauvau. Turn right onto rue de Faubourg St-Honoré, and you'll stroll past the Palais de l'Élysée, official residence of France's president, several impressive embassy buildings, and the poshest shops in Paris. At rue Royale, turn right and walk to the Place de la Concorde to admire the Egyptian obelisk. From the Place de la Concorde, turn left and stroll through the Jardin des Tuileries to the Louvre. Pick a section, then a few rooms, for your first visit. You will only be able to get the merest taste, for this is one of the world's largest and finest museums, and it would take months to see it in its entirety. Have lunch and rest your weary feet either before or after your Louvre visit. Sometime in the afternoon, when you need a break, drop in for something refreshing at a café that appeals to you. From the Louvre, walk to the Seine and turn left (east) along the quai to Place du Chatelet Day 2 Go to the Ile de la Cité for a look at the Cathedral de Notre-Dame, then to the Palais de Justice to admire the the splendid Sainte Chapelle and the gloomy Conciergerie, then explore the Latin Quarter and the Invalides before taking the Métro to the Trocadéro station for a walk downhill to the Eiffel Tower.
