France Travel Planner by Tom Brosnahan & Jane Fisher   Ribeauvillé, Alsace, France Guide
A medieval wine-making town crowned by a ruined medieval castle.... How romantic can you get! It's an easy ride from Selestat to Ribeauvillé.

Istanbul Love Bus, a novel

Ribeauvillé, a wine-making town 18 km (11 miles) north of Colmar, 17 km (10.5 miles) southwest of the train station in Selestat (map) at the foot of the Vosges mountains, is among the prettiest and best-preserved of the Alsace wine towns.

Besides wine, Ribeauvillé is known as the minstrels' town, having had a Festival des Ménétriers coinciding with the church festival Nativité de la Vierge for the past six centuries. (The festival is still celebrated on and around the first Sunday in September.)

Parts of Ribeauvillé's medieval defensive walls survive, and three castles loom on its outskirts. The Gothic churches of St-Gregoire and St-Augustine are worth a look.

Larger than charming Eguisheim, Ribeauvillé has more and larger wineries and wine shops, restaurants and boutiques, and a bit more bustle.

With its castle looming on the hill above, its numerous colorful traditional festivals during the year, and its many streets lined with noble half-timbered medieval buildings, Ribeauvillé is a fine place to get a taste of Alsace, its history, cuisine and wines.
